I really hope you guys enjoyed the video. You can watch more videos by clicking here and here And you can subscribe down below Bye. One of the things that we frequently use with my daughter is her phone, we bought it, we pay for the service when she's not making good choices we take her phone away, it's the same thing. You can pull a plug, they can be sitting there playing and you can actually walk up to the wall and pull the plug. So we strongly encourage and empower, we try to empower our parents to make appropriate choices and set clear boundaries. Because sometimes it just doesn't occur to them or the other piece is that they don't wanna put up with the whining and the nagging and the crying and the histrionics and those kinds of things.
Hopefully you can give them some tools to use to be able to withstand that onslaught of emotion from their adolescents. That's something that we really work with. - [Voiceover] That was a treasure. Thank you for sharing that, Denise. Let's put up our last polling question, which we are gonna keep up for a few minutes because we wanna give you all a chance to plug in your favorite referrals for adolescent or family services in Northern Nevada and we may have some people in Southern Nevada, go ahead and throw out there what your favorite service is, just make a little note of where it is. Include agencies, hospital, daycare, education, tutoring, specialty services, private practice, nonprofit. If you just have a name of an organization or a person that you like to refer and what you refer them for, this is a treasure, you guys, when we share what our favorites are. So while you are doing that, we're gonna talk a little bit. I'd like to move ahead, if you don't mind, Denise, to the co-occurring disorder overview because I think that's essentially what we want to kind of end on because we've only got a few minutes left. - [Voiceover] Do we have any questions that people...? - [Voiceover] Have you guys seen any questions, Sherry, have we missed any, Jeanyne or Sherry, have we missed any questions so far? Because I've been watching the chat and I haven't seen any. - [Voiceover] I just wanted to do a little bit of overview about co-occurring disorders. According to the research, almost 21% of U.S. children ages nine to 17 had a diagnosable mental or addictive disorder associated with at least minimum impairment. Most of the kids and you with mental health disorders, 75 to 80%, do not receive services. This is criminal as far as I'm concerned, do not receive services and I think that happens for a wide variety of reasons, parents aren't aware that their children are really exhibiting behaviors that are not the norm, we don't have well-educated school personnel, they can't tell. If the school personnel actually has a suspicion that the child's behavior is outside the norm or might need to be addressed, I have heard that the school districts actually tend to discourage any identification because then the school district will be held responsible for helping to get that child services that they need and they don't wanna be put in that position. So it's just really, it's really alarming. In 2004, it was estimated that over almost a million and a half youth were in need of substance abuse treatment and less than 10% of those who could have benefited from it received specialty care. There's a psychiatric comorbidity of between 50 and 90%, kind of depending on what research you read or who you talk to and our experience at Quest is probably between 50 and 60% of the kids that we see have a co-occurring disorder and as I mentioned earlier, the most prevalent co-occurring disorder is ODD, oppositional defiant disorder, followed by ADHD and then it's very closely followed by depression, anxiety, those kinds of things. Those with co-occurring disorders have an earlier onset of substance use, they use substances more frequently, they have used substances over a longer period of time and they have greater rates of family, school, and legal problems and early life issues, like things have happened to them earlier in life and it's interesting too because when you read the research on kids who have gambling disorders, it talks a lot about many of those children have more severe negative life experiences than kids who do not have a gambling disorder or who are non-gamblers. - [Voiceover] Awesome, we've got the two minute warning going here, Denise E., that was excellent and I've got the Quest Counseling slide up here right now and I would like to have you publish the poll, if you would, my assistant from CASAT, so that we can see what the favorites are that people have been listing too and I am gonna skip ahead to our closing slide. Beautiful vision for you to look at while you're looking at the poll of who some of the favorite folks are that people refer to and, of course, Quest is one of them. - [Voiceover] I just wanted to mention that the second part of the series will, I think we're gonna address more in-depth on factors, prevention, resources, and interventions, like what you can actually look for and be a little more specific about what we need to do in order to educate. - [Voiceover] Additional case studies and more information for your consideration. We're gonna take some... Teen Addicts Gambling and Mental Health So it's just really interesting because it's such a double-edged sword, there is just so much about technology that is valuable and useful and can really advance people's learning and abilities, at the same time, we have to be so cautious about what those things are, what we expose our kids to, how long we allow them to participate and those kinds of things, so I just kinda wanted to throw that out there around the whole gaming piece. - [Voiceover] Very important and this slide is just to remind people that the experience of online gambling or any online behavior is very solitary and isolative. There is a great deal of information that can be gained by going online to find the results of conferences such as the 15th International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking, which occurred last year in Las Vegas and when you access those sites where they keep all of the content of the conference and it's international and the information is current and relevant, you'll find things from all over the world about what's happening in the world of adults and adolescents who are affected by gambling and gaming and risk taking, all the things that we've been talking about today. - [Voiceover] I also wanted to mention that adolescent gambling on the internet, according to studies, is really concerning because not only is it solitary, there's diminished supervision because usually the parent's not standing there. There's just such a huge potential for incurring significant losses over a very short period of time.
- [Voiceover] Truly. - [Voiceover] And so there's a lot of concern out there about gambling on the internet as far as adolescents are concerned and anybody can say that they're 21 or 18 or whatever it is, whatever state has an age limit on it and there's nobody there checking IDs. - [Voiceover] There's nobody checking in England. They've been doing online gambling many more years than we have and that is the biggest problem is enforcement. When I'm working with parents and they're telling me that their child has a problem with video games or the spouse is telling me that their 20, 30 year old spouse has a problem with video games, I'm asking them to put some kind of a measuring stick on it to say if this is good for you because you have ADD and it helps you calm down, because it does quite often. - [Voiceover] Right. - [Voiceover] Then how about a 15 minute window or a 20 minute window and can you agree to monitor it? What kind of success have you had in putting time limits? - [Voiceover] It depends on whether or not the parents are interested in being a parent or being their friend of their child, so sometimes parents act shocked when I say something to the effect of, "Well, why don't you just disconnect "the Wii and put it in your room?" And it's like, "What? What! What!" So it's like you bought it, it's hooked up to your electricity, you're paying for it. Now, we're not even just talking about orthogames, meaning straight standard games. Like a game of chess or Puerto Rico, where players play to win. In RPG; there's RPGs like Mouse Guard where you take turns. It's the game master's turn, then the player's turn. Dungeons and Dragons doesn't work like that.
Nope, Dungeons and Dragons doesn't have turns at all. All right. So, if you're a player, right? How do you need to think about taking turns, right? Well, the first thing you really need to think about, what's most important is: the lefty righty, right try this website? In most games, a player that takes their turn before you, especially if there's more than two players, will be able to affect you in some way. And a player that goes after you, you'll usually be able to do something to them simply because of the fact that you go before they do. So, if a guy goes before me, he could do something to interrupt what I'm about to do and mess with me. So, when you're going to sit down at the table, if you know the game is clockwise, look at who's sitting where. Make sure the really powerful guy is on the left and the really weak guy is on the right. This proves problematic. You might wonder, why do so many games go clockwise? The only reason games go clockwise and that's the order of play is because that's easier for people to remember. That is the only reason. And a lot of games are actually really unbalanced as a result. We would play El Grande, which is this bidding game, but once you bid on your position for turn order then everything else just went clockwise. And the problem with that was that once you realized that to sit to the left of someone, or the right of someone, and we would stand around the table like, "You want to play El Grande?" "Sure. I'm just waiting for someone to sit down." We started having to play another game to figure out where we'd sit in El Grande, because the game didn't take this into account. There's a thing you can get called Shocking Roulette, it's a pretty popular gaming device. Everyone puts their finger in and one person gets shocked, and that's how you know who goes first. And you can use this multiple times to create a turn order, if necessary. Which means everyone but one person will get shocked, which is pretty fun. Now one thing to really think about as a player is: some games give you a way to change the turn order. Like in Caylus someone can use, I think the Provost to jump... - Whatever building it is. - There's a way. You can go in this building and change the turn order. Now I get to go first. Any time a game lets you spend in-game resources to change the turn order, the game is telling you that turn order is really important to winning. So, if you're a game maker, right? How do you decide how to use this taking turns thing? And really the big development in the tabletop world that's happened, in terms of taking turns and the design of them in games, is that we went from games where each player did a whole bunch of stuff on their turn and the other people waited, right? Like war games, you know? One person does a whole bunch of stuff. Move all my guys. Attack, attack, attack. Do all this stuff and then, now it's your turn. You play Samurai Swords or... Ikusa, Shogun. - It's all the same. - It's all the same game. It's like, yeah, the game only take four turns. - The turn takes four hours and... - Risk or Axis and Allies. Scott's turn in that turn takes a full hour. So now, modern games, what they do is; if they have turn taking at all, they do lots and lots of little turns. When you play Eclipse it's like: I move, and the next guy researches, and the next guy builds, and the next guy moves, and the next guy... Right? You're going around doing lots of little things. Ticket to ride. It's your turn. You can take the cards, which takes two seconds. You can build trains, which takes a few more seconds. You can take routes, you almost never do that- maybe once a game. Right? And that also doesn't take very long at all. So it's: take trains, take trains, take trains, bullet trains, take trains. It goes around really fast. And that's a modern game design. People aren't bored at the table. That's why newer tabletop games are much more popular. Now, at the same time, there's a lot of subtlety there. It always feels good when one gets money from winning. If one can do it from the comfort and safety of your own home it gets even better. Here are some tips so that your winning money experience becomes better.

I am from Seattle and write about living large in the garden, getting the best room when you travel, and expressing your inner gourmet in the kitchen.
I’m thinking about scallions, aka green onions. Simple, basic, easy to ignore. I have tended to think of them as parsley with a bit more flavor, sprinkled on top of some dishes. But in Georgeanne Brennan’s new cookbook, Gather, there's a wonderful recipe for Creamy Polenta with White Cheddar and Green Onions. Once you get over the fact that you have to stand at the stove and stir the polenta or it turns into something geologic, it’s easy. Georgeanne recommends bringing some reading material to the stove. I’ve been making this for breakfast, so I bring the newspaper (yes, that atavistic thing printed on big sheets of paper). Wow, maybe it’s the combo of sharp cheese and green onions or the fact that the onions are sautéed, but they become delicious green flavor buds in this comforting dish. Here’s the recipe: Creamy Polenta with White Cheddar and Green Onions 1 bunch green onions 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, divided 6 to 7 cups water 1-1/2 cups polenta 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt or kosher salt 1/3 cup shredded white cheddar cheese or soft, fresh goat cheese 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper Finely chop the green onions, using all but the upper third of the green stalk. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the green onions and let them “sweat,” cooking them through but not letting them brown, about 5 minutes. Remove them from the heat and set aside. In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, bring 4 cups of the water to a boil. Add the polenta in a steady stream, whisking as you pour it into the pot. Whisk in the salt. Reduce the heat to low and continue whisking until there are no lumps, about 5 minutes. Continue to cook until the polenta is soft, has thickened, and begins to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 20 minutes. (Add more water if the polenta gets thick before it is soft enough.) Stir in the remaining butter, the cheese, pepper, and green onions. Serve immediately. Makes 8 servings |
